The laboratory is open to all qualified researchers in Israel as well as visitors from abroad. We encourage you to come and visit the laboratory, discuss your needs, and then provide a short written explanation of the project you wish to carry out in the laboratory. Please itemize the equipment that you wish to use or you would like us to purchase. If you do not reside in Jerusalem and need support for your travel, please provide an estimate of the cost.

Your obligations to the laboratory are simple. – just acknowledge in all publications that, "this research was supported by the Charles E. Smith Family and Prof. Joel Elkes Laboratory for Collaborative Research in Psychobiology."

In 2007 NIPI awarded  a grant to establish Israel's first national core facility for advance brain imaging to the Functional Brain Center at the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv.  The facility enables scientists from all over Israel and abroad to utilize the latest state-of-the-art equipment in non-invasive exploration of the human brain. The grant will broaden the center's brain mapping capabilities to include EEG in addition to the existing MRI-- a central player in the brain-imaging revolution of the last decade.

Under the directorship of Dr. Talma Hendler M.D. Ph.D., faculty member at Tel Aviv University’s Department of Psychology and well known for her research in cognitive emotional processing, the facility has become a centerpiece of Israeli neuropsychological research. One of the academic goals of the center is to advance basic research in neuroscience systems toward rapid clinical translation into neuron-psychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, trauma, dementia, schizophrenia, and autism.

NIPI sees the creation of new laboratories and clinical research centers as a crucial step in the development of psychobiological research in Israel, as well as in the retention of Israeli researchers. Additional facilities would enable access to sophisticated technologies vital to scientists' understanding of psychobiology as well as help translate basic scientific discoveries into clinical and pharmacological advances.

Sizeable budgets for equipment and maintenance are required, as technological obsolescence occurs rapidly in areas such as brain imaging, and high-resolution microscopy. NIPI is looking for the crucial support to add additional facilities to enable Israeli researchers to remain at the frontier of biopsychological investigation.
