| NIPI GRANT PROGRAMS |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| I. Young Investigator Grant Program: This program receives the largest portion of NIPI funding, and provides researchers newly appointed to faculty positions with two years of non-salary financial support ($25,000 per year) to conduct innovative research. |
| Application Guidelines: |
1. The Institute supports research in the brain and behavioral sciences, which have direct relevance to basic and clinical psychobiology.
2. Applications for funding may be submitted by researchers associated with institutions of higher learning, accredited research institutes, and hospitals. Preference will be given to young researchers, i.e. holders of a Ph.D. or M.D degree with appointments at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (up to 3 years after the initial Senior Lecturer rank appointment). Only in extremely exceptional cases will support be granted to more senior staff, e.g. researchers from other fields who have changed their focus to psychobiology and lack other sources of financial support.
3. Each researcher may submit only one application.
4. Applications for funding can be made for one or two years, although formal approval of a grant is given for only one year. Researchers applying for financial support for a second year must submit a follow-up application, as stipulated in the official application forms, including a scientific report on the progress of the research, up until April 30 of each year. Recipients of a Young Investigator Grant may apply for another two-year grant to be activated at the conclusion of their grant period. This application will compete with those applying for new awards.
5. A research grant will be approved on condition that the researcher does not leave Israel for a period of more than four months during the year of his research. In the event that a researcher wishes to travel abroad for longer, he or she must inform the Institute of his or her intentions, and the grant will be frozen during the period that he or she is abroad.
6. An application for research funding which has also been submitted to other funding agencies will not be approved if full support of the project has been granted by any of these agencies. The applicant must detail in his/her application all sources of financial support that are at his/her disposal, as well as all applications submitted to other sources.
7. Financial support is given as partial participation in the research budget in the form of stipends to students working on the research project, participation in research expenses, and the acquisition of required materials. In special circumstances, funding will also be allocated to other budgetary items.
8. Each application should be submitted by e-mail, along with two printed copies in English, and CD of the application by mail. The total scope of the application should not exceed l5 pages.
Research support by the National Institute for Psychobiology is up to $15,000 per annum, with matching funds supplied by the host Institution or another source of another $10,000 per annum. Deadline for submission: December 31. |

II. Charles E. Smith Fellowship in Honor of Professor Joel Elkes
This Fellowship is awarded to one of the applicants for a Young Investigator Grant, as above. The purpose of the Fellowship is to assist in the absorption of a young scientist in the field of psychobiology into a track which will lead to a permanent academic position upon completion of the period of the Fellowship. The nominating institution should append to the application a letter from the Rector of the University or head of the institute or hospital, nominating the candidate for the Elkes Fellowship.
Thus, the nominating institution should submit an explicit commitment to the effect that at the end of the period of the fellowship, a permanent position will be made available to the Fellow, based upon his or her personal distinction in research and teaching.
Each University or Research Institution may nominate only one candidate for this Fellowship, and only 1 fellowship will be granted annually.
The nominator should also attach 3 letters of recommendation. The young MD or Ph.D. will be provided with initial research support for up to 3 years, conditional upon availability of at least the same level of research resources which will be provided by the employing Institute.
Applications should be submitted on our regular Young Investigator Grant forms, with the additions specific to this Fellowship (nomination and recommendations).
Research support is up to $30,000 per annum, and the host Institution must supply matching research funds of at least another $20,000 per annum.

| Drug Abuse Research Grant in Memory of Steven Smith: This Fellowship is awarded to one of the applicants for a Young Investigator Grant, as above. Within the framework of the preferential funding of research grants by the Institute, a research grant has been established by Mr. David Smith in memory of Mr. Steven Smith. The grant is designated for financing a research project in the area of drug abuse with emphasis on topics such as prevention and treatment of those afflicted with drug abuse. |
| Application Guidelines: |
1. Financial support will be similar to that of regular Young Investigator Grants.
2. The regular application forms should be used, with an attached letter stating that this application is also for this particular grant.
3. Deadline for submission: December 31 of each year. |

| Clinical Research Grant in Memory of Haim and Regina Rabinowitz: This Fellowship is awarded to one of the applicants for a Young Investigator Grant, as above. Within the framework of the preferential funding of research grants by the Institute, a research grant has been established by the Prince and Eliaouf families in memory of Chaim and Regina Rabinowitz. The grant is designated for financing a research project in the area of clinical psychiatry with emphasis on topics such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and disorders related to or induced by military service. |

1. Financial support will be similar to that of regular Young Investigator Grants.
2. The regular application forms should be used, with an attached letter stating that this application is also for this particular grant.
3. Deadline for submission: December 31 of each year. |

| Extended Grant for Collaborative Basic – Clinical/Translational Research: This grant supports a joint collaboration between a basic investigator and a clinical/translational investigator. It sponsors an in-depth and broad-scaled research project of more veteran researchers who have attained positions up to University associate professor or Hospital equivalent. Grants last up to three years ($50,000 per year for each investigator). |
| Application Guidelines: |
1. These grants are open to advanced researchers who hold a PhD or MD degree and are employed at universities, hospitals, or other research institutions at the rank of Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor (up to 3 years after the Associate Professor appointment). Financial support will be granted for a period of up to three years.
2. Each candidate is restricted to one application. Thus, Senior Lecturers may apply for a Young Investigator Grant or an Extended Grant but not both.
3. The application will be reviewed by a scientific committee set up by the Institute, and will be approved for one year only. Grant recipients who wish to receive financial support for a second year, and later for a third, must submit a follow-up application as specified in the official application forms, including a scientific report to be submitted by April 30 during their first (and later second) year of research.
4. The grant will be approved on condition that the researchers not leave the country for a period of more than four months during the year of research. If a researcher wishes to travel abroad for a longer period, he or she must inform the Institute of this intention whereby the grant will be frozen during the period abroad.

These grants sponsor in-depth and broad-scaled research projects of more veteran researchers who have attained positions up to associate professor. Competitive Process
Grant submissions undergo a rigorous and competitive refereed evaluation process. The initial grant evaluation is performed by NIPI's Scientific Advisory Board, which is comprised of representatives from every major research university and hospital in the country. Grant proposals are allocated for review among Board members according to areas of expertise. Grant proposals showing the highest degree of scientific merit are then sent to local and foreign external reviewers for additional evaluation. These reviewers assess the proposals and provide each one with a grade. The Scientific Advisory Board then reconvenes to decide upon the grant recipients. Once a grant is allocated, grant recipients submit an annual report to the Scientific Advisory Board, which decides whether to renew funding for the upcoming academic year. |

The Charles E. Smith Annual Memorial Lecture
Once each year, a Guest Lecturer in the field of Psychobiology is invited to present a Lecture in memory of Mr. Charles E. Smith, Founder of the Institute. The Lecture generally takes place during the month of March.
The Lecturer is chosen by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Institute.
Recommendations for the Smith Lecturer can be submitted attaching curriculum vitae, a list of publications and the subject of the lecture, until April 30 of each year. The nominator must establish prior contact with the nominee and ensure his or her acceptance of the invitation. In order to streamline the procedure for choosing the lecturer, it is highly recommended to contact the Director of the Institute by telephone - 02-6584088, by fax -02-5653267 or by e-mail for a preliminary discussion. It is usual that the Lecturers are chosen alternately from the fields of clinical and basic research in Psychobiology.
The Institute will assume the Lecturer's travel expenses as well as financing his or her stay in Israel in accordance with established guidelines |
